When should I visit an orthodontist with my child?
The right time for the start of treatment is especially important for children, so jaws and teeth develop healthily. We recommend a first examination of your child at the age of about 7. Rest assured we’ll examine your child in a sensitive and age-appropriate way free of fear. After the examination, we’ll discuss with you whether your child actually needs therapy, when is the right time for it and what options are medically advisable.
Treatment Methods

Removable braces

Removable braces are the traditional ones among types of braces. This option for correction is usually applied when the child’s teeth are changing, i.e. when there are both baby teeth and the first permanent teeth and there’s still a lot going on in terms of jaw growth. In our own dental laboratory we fabricate, from plastic and stable wire elements, the removable braces individually and precisely to fit your child.

Aesthetic brackets

Orthodontics has come a long way. Materials and methods are available today that make discreet and efficient treatment possible. Tooth-colored and therefore almost invisible brackets, for instance, are an optional form of treatment and an alternative to conventional metal braces.

Lingual brackets

Show your best smile – not your braces! Brackets on the inside (lingual brackets) are attached to the back of the teeth and offer all the advantages of fixed braces without being visible. Your lingual brackets are custom-made, individually designed and adapted to your shape of your teeth – for maximum wearing comfort and precision.

Correction splints / aligners

Would you like to have your tooth misalignment corrected gently and safely but don’t want to wear fixed braces? Then tooth correction splints might be the ideal solution for you. The transparent aligners are made of special elastic plastic and comfortable and agreeable to wear; and they’re inconspicuous to boot. The splints are made individually and custom-tailored to fit your teeth precisely. After customized and complex programming by a dental specialist, they can move your teeth gradually into the desired position.

Sports mouth guard

Are you or your child active in contact sports or ball games? We recommend a special high-quality sports mouth guard that we individually fabricate in our lab and adapt to the respective type of sports. Our tailor-made mouth guard fits over braces.

Jaw relocation

In the case of particularly pronounced misalignments of the jaw in adults or if there are strong asymmetries in the face, orthodontic therapy alone is not sufficient. In such cases, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon must relocate the jaw bone in surgery and fix it in the correct position.

Retainers

Have you or your child successfully completed the orthodontic therapy and are delighted about your radiant smile with beautiful teeth and a completely new feeling of being alive? We want it to stay that way! It is thus very important after treatment to stabilize the result with a retainer. A thin, stranded wire is attached to the back of your front teeth that optimally stabilizes your teeth in the correct position.

Procedure for your orthodontic treatment

1. Consultation

Are you uncertain whether you or your child actually need orthodontic treatment? During your initial visit to our office practice, we examine your teeth and make a recommendation on whether a therapy is medically necessary and sensible. We take a great deal of time to introduce you to all potential treatment options.

2. Diagnostics

During the second visit to our dental office (approx. 30 minutes), we take digital images of your teeth and jaws with our low-radiation X-ray machine, make photos of your teeth, make digital tooth impressions on request and examine the jaw joint in relation to its functionality. Based on our findings, we draw up an individualized treatment plan for you that takes your wants and needs into account.

3. Therapy discussion

In a personal discussion, Dr. Christine Kownatzki takes all the time that’s needed to talk in detail about the planned treatment with you and your child. Using X-rays, images and models, she’ll explain the malocclusion graphically to you, go through the treatment procedure and point out alternatives.

4. Start of treatment

Depending on the extent of the correction you desire, we will treat your tooth and bite misalignment with removable or fixed braces or else with aligners. In our in-house lab, we can fabricate many braces on our own and thus start your treatment at short notice. The duration of the treatment varies and depends on the starting point of the therapy and the severity of the malocclusion.

In about every five to eight weeks, we welcome you and your child again to a follow-up visit at our dental practice to ensure the progress of the treatment.

5. Stabilization

Once the measures of orthodontic correction have been completed, it’s extremely important to stabilize and maintain the result. There are various options: With a thin wire (retainer) attached to the front teeth on the side of the tongue, removable braces or a transparent splint, your teeth can be stabilized in the correct end position optimally. We’ll gladly look at all the different options that are suitable for you in a comprehensive discussion with you.

6. Assumption of costs

Assumption of costs for children

For children under the age of 18, the statutory health insurers usually assume the costs for initial consultation and treatment or pay a percentage if the malocclusion is severe. We’d be delighted to advise you and check whether a cost assumption by your statutory health insurance can be claimed.

Non-contractual service offers that go beyond the range offered by statutory insurers are available to you, and we’d be delighted to discuss them.

Assumption of costs for adults
In the case of adults who have statutory insurance, the health insurer bears the cost for the initial consultation. Whether the insurer pays for the treatment in full or in part depends on the severity of the malocclusion and will be checked as part of the initial consultation. For adults, the statutory health insurance only subsidizes specially severe jaw abnormalities that need to be treated in conjunction with jaw surgery. We’d be delighted to advise you about options and alternatives.

Non-contractual service offers that go beyond the range offered by statutory insurers are available to you, and we’d be delighted to discuss them.

If you have private insurance for adults and children, the subsidy depends on the insurance plan you have selected. It goes without saying that we’ll prepare a detailed cost plan you can present to your private health insurer.

Oral hygiene & care tips for people with braces
Cleaned braces, clean teeth and well-cared-for gums are not only aesthetically pleasing but also a vital prerequisite for the success of your orthodontic treatment. For effective cleaning, we recommend using an electric toothbrush and always brushing your teeth after every meal. If you or your child have been given braces at our dental practice, it goes without saying that we’ll provide you with valuable tips and tricks as well as practical aids to help you with cleaning. An oral hygiene test that temporarily dyes plaque and makes it visible helps to find vulnerable points.

Quick help with little “emergencies”

Do the removable braces feel uncomfortable?

In most cases, people get used to their new braces in no time at all. If the braces feel uncomfortable in one place for more than three days, you should take the braces out and schedule an appointment with us.

A bracket or metal band has come loose?

Please call us. We’ll schedule a quick SOS appointment to re-attach the braces for you or your child.

Is the rubber chain torn, or has a rubber ring gotten lost?

Please call us. We’ll schedule a quick SOS appointment for you or your child.

The end of the archwire has slipped out of the bracket?

First measure: Try to push the archwire end or band under the bracket again. If there are places where the wire pricks you, please use the wax we’ve given you. Please call us. We’ll schedule a quick SOS appointment for you or your child.
Have you gotten to a “real” orthodontist?
Not all orthodontists are the same: You should pay heed to this when choosing a dentist!
When selecting the dentist who’ll treat you, you ought to check their qualifications and make sure they’re actually an orthodontist and are working exclusively in orthodontics:

Dr. Christine Kownatzki – your orthodontist

Dr. Christine Kownatzki is licensed as a “real” orthodontist (dental specialist in orthodontics) on three continents. After her German examination of dentistry and acquiring her medical license in Germany, she completed a three-year training as a orthodontist at Columbia University in New York. In addition, she passed the american and german dental exam and obtained American specialization as orthodontist. She studied state-of-the-art orthodontic methods directly with the masters in braces and aligner technology and was also trained in the conventional skills of orthodontics. As an orthodontist, Dr. Christine Kownatzki is licensed in Germany, the United States and Australia.

Orthodontist

Orthodontists are certified dental specialists who, after graduation as dentists,
successfully complete a three-year full-time training in the field of orthodontics with a final dental specialist examination. Due to their experience and the specialization in orthodontic treatments, dental specialists in orthodontics are capable of recognizing rare growth patterns, implement individual treatment options gently and, if need be, correctly respond to adverse tissue reactions.

Dentist, M. Sc. orthodontics

A dentist with the title of Master of Science (M. Sc.) in orthodontics is not an orthodontist (dental specialist) but has completed an additional part-time training course. In contrast to the three-year specialist training for orthodontics, the training is shorter, and the dentist is not entitled to the title of orthodontist.

Dentist, focus on orthodontics

In principle, every trained dental practitioner in Germany can offer orthodontic services – without any special qualifications. The designation “with a focus on orthodontics” is possible after a few courses and with little experience in treatment.
